London Gigs Under a Tenner: Tom Vek, Tijuana Panthers, Girl Band, Glass Animals

Tuesday, 10th June

  • Tom Vek @ Rough Trade East (FREE)

Tom Vek’s third album, “Luck”, launched yesterday and, as is becoming normal, he’s playing a free set to album buyers at Rough Trade East this evening. It should be a lovely preamble to his gigs coming up this year.

He’s also playing:

    • 11th June, XOYO (sold out)
    • 20th June, Southbank Centre with Olga Bell (Tickets)
    • 15th October, KOKO (Tickets)
  • Tijuana Panthers @ The Shacklewell Arms, £7.50 (Tickets)

With their album, Wayne Interest, released earlier in the month, the three-piece from California are worth catching while they’re in town.

Wednesday, 11th June

  • Girl Band @ The Shacklewell Arms, £7.10 (Tickets)

Much admired Dublin band, Girl Band, made waves with their 25-second Record Store Day single, and are rightly making hay on the back of that hype.

Friday, 13th June

  • Glass Animals @ Rough Trade East (FREE)

If there’s a band that can make us forget that 2014 has belonged to St. Vincent so far, it’s Oxford’s Glass Animals. Their album, Zaba, also released yesterday. This lunch-time show is worth taking a break from your screens for.

Gold Flake paint has a very insightful write-up of the album’s literary sources:

it’s important to note that the album’s title is derived from William Steig’s fantastical novel The Zabajaba Jungle where a boy embarks on a dreamy adventure through a vividly imagined jungle full of fantastical creatures and visceral vegetation.

That’s it for this week!
